I wanted to know what all I had on my new electronic dictionary, but since it’s all in Japanese I was having trouble keeping track of what was what. I decided to make a reference chart for myself, and I’d like it to be available to others with similar problems. So here is a ridiculously detailed list of contents (in English and Japanese) for the Casio EX-Word Dataplus 5 XD-A9800. It is a Google Document and should be accessible to anyone.
EDIT: I wrote a tutorial for those of you who are trying to figure out how to use it. You can find it here.
Hope this is helpful to someone out there π
I FOUND YOUR BLOG, OMG. β€ Hope you're sleeping and having fun and super excited. I'm pretty stoked to read about all your adventures.
much love.
Very helpful, thanks!
By any chance, can you figure out what is the layout button for and how to use it?
Hi! I’m glad I could help someone out π
If you hit shift and then hit the layout button it changes the way the text is displayed in certain places–so if you’re looking at a dictionary entry, it will space the text differently or get rid of the lines. Also, if you’re reading one of the e-books that’s on there, you can switch which direction the text goes from (up-down to left-right, etc.)
Enjoy your dictionary :3
Thank you so much! I bought this dictionary only a few weeks ago, so I’m not really familiar with it yet… Thank you for your help! :3
Hi, Seva! I wanted to let you know I posted a tutorial for our dictionary, so if you’re still confused about how to use it, this might be of help: https://girlinjapan.wordpress.com/2011/01/27/denshijishotutorial/
Just came across your site today. Thank you so much for that chart! I’d managed to translate the buttons on the dictionary itself, but was dreading having to dig down through the menus. I really appreciate you sharing your work!
Hi! I’m glad I could help you out! π Enjoy your dictionary!

i just got the casio ex a9800 two weeks ago. thanks for the list. it’s really helpful.
but, i’m still not sure how to use the denshi jisho. is there a manual in english on the net at all?
i’m using it mainly to translate japanese into english and to look up the kanji.
Hey, Chris!
You are super lucky, because you commented at a time when I would rather write tutorials than do my homework. So, ta-da! A tutorial for you! Enjoy π
Thanks so much for this! Was thinking of returning the thing because I was so confused. This really helped set me on the right path.
love from Tokyo,
Tim
Glad to hear it, Tim! Just so you know, I also did a how-to-use-this-thing tutorial over here: https://girlinjapan.wordpress.com/2011/01/27/denshijishotutorial/
Enjoy π I’m super jealous that you’re in Japan right now o_o
Hi there, I discovered your website by the use
of Google at the same time as looking for a similar

Hi there, simply become aware of your blog thru Google, and found that it is really informative. I’m
gonna be careful for brussels. I’ll appreciate should you continue this in future. A lot of folks might be benefited from your writing. Cheers!
Hi. I have the exact same model, but i wanted to ask something general about denshi jishos, when i bought it some of my japanese learning friends told me that i can add some dictionaries to it with its data cable or with an sd card. Do you know anything like that? Thanks.
I’m sorry, I don’t know anything about that at all! π¦

Hi,
Thanks a lot for this great tutorial!
I just wanted to know one more thing.
I am not so good with kanji yet so is there any way I can see furigana in this dictionary?
Thanks.
I’m afraid I haven’t found a furigana option for the dictionaries themselves, but I believe the Quick Search option will give you the kana reading on any kanji (don’t have my dictionary on hand to check).
